Up and limping…

Please excuse the ’stock’ look & feel.  I think it will take a while to get some ’style’ into this site as I will have to tackle php and css!

But I did pass a milestone tonight when I got all the basic functionality working (sidebar links to About, Categories, Archives and the Link Directory).

The installation had some startup troubles… the current post worked from the home page, but if you turned on permalink formatting none of the sidebar links would work.  The Link Directory installed o.k. and would let you create link entries and categories but only the category would display… trying to open a category gave you a 404 error.

I diligently searched the forums and easily found numerous ‘unresolved’ questions posted that described exactly the same symptoms as above… couldn’t find an answer!

Turned out the answer for me was to carefully read the “Using Permalinks” documentation on WordPress’s site… I am using SME Server and by default it is very conservative with .htaccess settings.  You need to have FollowSymLinks as an option and AllowOverride set as below…

<Directory /home/e-smith/files/ibays/tubenexus/html>
    Options FollowSymLinks
    Options +Indexes
    Options +Includes
    AllowOverride All
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from all
</Directory>

Once the httpd.conf file was corrected and with a reboot (too lazy to figure out how to restart apache) everything was working correctly.  A real newbie problem.  Now I need a trip to the bookstore for ’style’.
